Our collection of information about the coffee plant, how coffee beans are harvested and roasted, the history of coffee and more.
Coffee was first used in the 9th century. According to legend, Ethiopian herders noticed their goats seemed to dance and have more energy after consuming the berries of the plant. People in the Galla tribe of Ethiopia began grinding coffee berries and mixing them with animal fat. They noticed an increase in their own energy.
Coffee plants spread to Arabia where, for the first time, they were grown on plantations and brewed into a beverage called qahwa.
